The UJ Art Gallery hosts a fascinating exhibition this month that interrogates the role of portraiture in self-expression for a contemporary, "selfie"-obsessed audience. By re-examining concepts of power, identity and body politics depicted in traditional portraits, the exhibition aims to spark a conversation about how we express and present ourselves – intentionally or subconsciously – in modern manifestations of portraiture, from the ubiquitous selfie to our carefully crafted online personas.
The exhibition is jointly curated by the MTN Art Collection and UJ Art Collection and features works by critically acclaimed artists such as Gerard Bhengu, Phillemon Hlungwani and Judith Mason as well as new portraits by emerging artists that comment on topics like self-awareness, social validation and exclusion, immediacy and impulse in contemporary portraiture. From more traditional oil on canvas to video installations, the emerging artists' series spans a variety of media and provokes the audience to reflect on both the artists intentions and the deeper meaning of our own personal response.
