BIOGRAPHY

Bridget Modema (b.1992) is a Gauteng-based multi-disciplinary artist, curator, and creative entrepreneur. She's currently completing a Masters Degree in Fine Art from the University of Pretoria and a Metaphysics degree through the University of Metaphysics, Arizona. She apprenticed from 2013-2017 under Lothar Böttcher and Guy de Toit.

 

Modema's work varies between traditional and contemporary sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, alchemy, cymatic and psychoanalytical art. She is the fore-runner of glass 3D portraits. She is the founder of Sub C Art House and Metatron Construction and has been working as a curator in Pretoria and Johannesburg for the five years. She has exhibited locally and internationally.

 

Like a shaman, she aims to channel through the modern age and bring healing to society by exploring the realm of trauma, emotional development, energy transference and alternative emotional/energy release methods to transform a blocked energy pathway.

 

Her achievements expand to curating The Project Space at the RMB Turbine Art Fair 2019. She was 1 of 10 finalists for ‘Continuing Conversations – UJ portrait award 2018. Land art installation shown at the Venice Biennale 2015-16 at the South African architectural pavilion as part of the Cool Capital biennale. Her work can be found in public collections, including the Department of Arts and Culture and the Pretoria Art Museum.

 

She formed part of artist career development programs, including, Art Source Artist Career Boot Camp (2019) facilitated by Art Source and the National Arts Council and RMB Talent Unlocked Artist Career Development Programme (2018) facilitated by Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) and Assemblage

RMB TALENT UNLOCK PROGRAMME

Assemblage | Johannesburg.

Assemblage, in collaboration with VANSA and Turbine Art Fair, has coordinated a six month intensive workshop programme funded by Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and  with a supporting grant from Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) for 18 emerging artists. The objective of this comprehensive programme was to provide the selected artists with support and guidance to develop their work with tools to sustain their art career once the programme is complete The programme concludes with a booth at the RMB Turbine Art Fair where the artists will be exhibiting their exciting new work. This exhibition of emerging artists will be curated by Fulufhelo Mobadi.

SLOW NETWORK – YEAR RESIDENCY, SWISSDEVELOPMENT AND COOPERATION OFFICE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA

SLOW Network is a collection of visual artists, writers, musicians, facilitators, poets, architects, performance artists and research based in South Africa who work on/with/around ad in waste/trash/garden. The Network functions as a platform for participating community, research and artist organizations. Funded principally by the Swiss Development and Cooperation Office in Southern Africa, the network is a project of the Capital Cities Institutional Research Theme at the University of Pretoria.
