South Africa commemorates Women’s Month in August as a tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings(link is external) on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women. The Government of South Africa declared August women’s month and 9 August is celebrated annually as Women’s Day

There you have it! Modema Art's #womensmonth contribution is by warmly welcoming the Sub C Art House artist of the month:

Martilise Snyman was born in 1990 and raised in Heidelberg – a small town

on the outskirts of Johannesburg. By the time Snyman matriculated in 2008

she had obtained a grade 5 in violin and music theory as well as a grade 6 in

piano from Unisa. Her higher education began with a degree in Visual Studies

from the University of Pretoria after which she studied a second degree

in Fine and Applied arts from Tshwane University of Technology majoring in

ceramics in 2017. During this long period of study she held positions as a

personal assistant for Willem Boshoff, head waitress at Kream restaurant

and as an entry level ceramics teacher. Currently Snyman is working as a

full-time ceramicist, teacher, designer and marketing agent at The Potters

Place, Pretoria.

Artist statement

Snyman is a peculiarly curios and imaginative individual. One method to mollify

these traits is through the adequate research she ensures before making

art. The subject matters she mainly pays interest in are Human behaviour

and Nature; with ongoing reading in the fields of Psychology, Mycology,

Eastern and Western Philosophies. Through the use of clay, Snyman aims to

create an appreciation and awareness of the role of Nature in our daily life

and hope to inform the viewer of the various benefits of Fungi specifically.

These three-dimensional works are accompanied by observational and figurative

drawings with different dry media.
